Presenting: the Métier Zine!

The Process

At the helm of this project were Melissa Morris, our Founder and Creative Director, Nicole Cari, our Art Director, and Ashwin Deshmukh, our Copywriter, who met up for many brainstorming sessions to bring the Zine! to life.

Illustrations

Because it’s full of things we love, the Zine! has a-ha inducing games and puzzles, plus cute little hand drawn illustrations because we love hand craftsmanship. We enlisted illustrators Jochen Gerner and Rob Wilson, who we’ve been admiring from afar, to create our Métier characters and visuals, and our friends at Studio Levin Wagner to bring the Zine! to life.

Jochen Gerner

From his book-filled studio in Nancy, we spoke to Jochen about creating our Métier characters, which were then brought to life through animation. Represented by Parisian gallery Anne Barrault, Jochen is an award-winning French illustrator and author, regularly working for magazines such as Le Monde and The New Yorker, and institutions of the likes of the Centre Georges Pompidou and Maison Hermès.

Rob Wilson

Located on the other side of the pond, we contacted the brilliant New-Yorker-with-Texan-roots Rob Wilson to work on illustrations and clever visuals in his distinctive style. A celebrated designer as well, Rob works with an extensive range of different clients internationally, from luxury brands to magazines.

Studio Levin Wagner

Spearheading the Zine! layout and design is Studio Levin Wagner. An LA-based creative studio partnership led by Melissa Levin (ex-Design Director for Uniqlo) and Daniel Wagner (ex-Design Director for T Magazine), Studio Levin Wagner has been instrumental in honing the visual and playful content, and wit for our inaugural Zine!. With years of experience in art direction and editorial design, the studio aims to create compelling visual concepts for international brands.

Paper Bags

Drawing on her background in sculpture, our designer and founder, Melissa Morris always begins the process of creating every new Métier with a life-size paper prototype in the studio. It inspired us to include a tiny little paper Métier bag for you to craft.

The Party

To celebrate its launch, we threw a party — another thing Métier is about — at Paperchase in Los Angeles. The artisanal forty-five year old print shop printed the inaugural Zine!.

Paperchase is an immigrant-founded, woman-run print shop whose expert craftsmanship and cutting edge design have cemented their status as a leader in the printing industry.

Drinks were inspired by the cocktail recipes in the Zine!, and bites were provided by Sqirl, which we highly recommend, among other fantastic global spots, in the Zine!.
