Criollo

One of the most talked about restaurants in Oaxaca from Enrique Olvera of Mexico City’s Pujol fame. Situated in an UNESCO certified mansion, the entrance winds through the kitchen and out onto a magnificent patio where fresh tortillas are made in the large clay cormal. A tasting menu changes daily in deference to seasonal produce, but past star dishes included sweet and spicy Caribbean Mullet, and tamales filled with huitlacoche, a Mexican corn truffle.

Monte Alban

See how the Zapotecs did it. Located just twenty minutes away from the city center, Monte Albán dates back to 500 BC. Designated a UNESCO Heritage Site, it features the remains of a once thriving metropolis with temples, palaces, tall stepped platforms, an observatory and a ball court with spectacular views of the surrounding valley and beyond.

Cocina de Humo

Extraordinarily intimate, guests, upon arrival, are welcomed to a chef’s table where the entirety of the six-course tasting menu is prepared from scratch in front of them. Using only ingredients from the local farms of her hometown of San Mateo Yucutindoô (proprietor Thalía Barros Garcia insists the altitude there results in the most flavourful produce) every dish from the daily changing menu; the mole, the wild mushrooms, whatever is fresh and delicious, is a taste explosion.

Marrying Brutalist influences with Colonial Oaxacan architecture, this restored, and redesigned, heritage structure has been transformed into a chic, luxury boutique hotel. Comprised of twelve rooms carefully curated with details - bedsheets to robes - crafted by local artisans, the grounds feature a rooftop pool as well as a courtyard. If you need a time-out from traditional Oaxaca cuisine, the restaurant, led by Mario Petterino specialises in excellent Italian fare from the Piedmont region.

Boulenc

Delicious bakery serving European-style artisanal breads - sourdough, baguettes, brioche - plus pastries as well as excellent coffee to pair. Buzzy in town, their popularity has led to a full-fledged restaurant next door, a provisions bodega, and a bed and breakfast hotel, affectionally referred to as a ‘bread and breakfast.’ See what the fuss is all about.

A must - premium coffee, brewed with locally sourced beans, for those who appreciate, and require, a nice pick-me-up. This unassuming and very friendly café also offers classic stateside favourites for breakfast - scrambled eggs, yogurt parfaits - as well as excellent sandwiches and salads for dining in, or take away.

Church of Santo Domingo de Guzman

An icon of Oaxaca. A stunning example of baroque architecture with its imposing façade and ornate filigree stucco detailing. The interior is equally as impressive, lavishly decorated in gold leaf ceilings with marble underfoot. A special time to visit is the afternoon when sunlight cascades through the stained-glass windows and casts everything in a wonderful golden glow.

Alfonsina

Located in the backyard of the chef’s own home, Jorge León has created one of the best restaurants in all of Mexico. Along a dirt road, a little outside of town, in a setting like a secret garden, León, along with his mother, serve rich simple traditional fare in five courses that are perfectly executed, and incredibly personal. A special experience.
