Melissa’s Design Notes: Our Leathers
06 January 2023
Highly Prized
Atelier Calfskin
This is the most exclusive leather in the world. Atelier is a French calfskin and has a smooth and polished appearance. And because Atelier is completely natural, it develops a beautiful patina with time, showing off the scratches and marks that I believe make it all the more personal and alluring. After six months of waiting (only very limited batches are made) it will finally be back in stock in early February. So if you love Atelier, I highly recommend you pre-order yours now, as it’s always in demand when it arrives and won’t be back again until June.
Hide & Chic
Buffalo
A staple in our collection since day one. Where Atelier Calfskin is polished and does not have a grain, Buffalo has a natural fine and flat grain which lends a more vintage feel. It’s very similar to Elvis but – owing to its unwaxed finish – without the subtle shine. Like all our leathers, it will develop a rare patina, but will not show marks or scratches.
Always On My Mind
Elvis
After four years of perfecting, we were thrilled to finally welcome Elvis to the stage. Crafted from water buffalo leather, it’s vegetable-tanned using chestnut and mimosa then finished with a touch of wax to give it a unique shine and a soft touch. I dreamt of creating this leather since before we launched and finding the worn-in-yet-luxe balance was a true labour of love. This is the leather that looks like the dream vintage bag you wished you had found; the shine and grain giving it a sexier attitude than the more polished and sophisticated Atelier. Currently in womens, Elvis for men’s will launch in a few weeks.
A Shining Example
Glossy Calfskin
Another newly arrived leather. Because it is a calfskin, it does not have a grain, so it has a flat and smooth appearance. The magic of Glossy is that despite its high-shine finishing, it is still incredibly soft and will develop a patina: an achievement we’re very proud of. I had so much fun developing the emerald and classic red colours, and the black – especially with the gold hardware – is so classic.
Easily Swayed
Suede
This is a definite fan-favourite and for good reason: it’s beautiful! People ask me if our suede is delicate and what to do to protect it. The truth is, because it is such high quality, you need to do very little. I live in London (where it often rains) and I never worry about our suede; it wears beautifully. The only thing I avoid is to wear my suede pieces with white or dark denim. Other than that, you can wear it with the ease of knowing, like all Métier bags, it will stand the test of time.
