An Evening On Broadway

Extra! Extra!

27 April 2022

Deprived of cultural events during the past two years, like most, we have been craving freedom of expression and of movement, and yearning for the performing arts to take centre stage once more.

In support and celebration of the arts, we gathered several friends in New York at the Longacre Theatre, steps away from the bustling Times Square, to watch Sam Gold’s Macbeth.

Featuring a spell-binding Ruth Negga alongside a great Daniel Craig in the lead roles of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, the descent into gory folly and madness was masterfully executed.

Spurred on by his wife after hearing the witches’ prophecy that he will one day become King of Scotland, Macbeth commits murder after murder to secure and protect his title. Consumed by bloody ambition, paranoia and guilt, they are both brought to reckoning and meet a grisly death.

Gold’s interpretation of the famed Scottish play on Broadway was performed by a limited cast taking on multiple roles, in true Shakespearean manner. Enthralling yet unsettling at times and humorous at others, Macbeth explores dark truths about greed, rage and corrosive ambition. Gold’s interpretation seemed particularly fitting in light of the troubled times we faced. As he states himself, he wanted ‘to give everyone that rage room’, to relieve the audience of their bottled-up anger and celebrate the return of the performing arts.

Ahead of the theatre, we took our friends out for dinner at the newly reopened Lambs Club. A timeless institution, with its red-leather banquettes, white table cloths and limestone fireplace, the Lambs Club offers a taste of old New York.

After being closed for two years, the impeccable service remains as well as the enchanting and cosy interior, but David Rabin at The Lambs Club’s helm ensured both the menu (created with three-star Michelin chef Michael White) and the ambiance were revamped to stay relevant in today’s world. Kyle Hotchkiss Carone, from Grand Tour Hospitality, modernised while maintaining its old-school glamour and authentic charm.
